The Basics


We will learn some basic Russian phrases that you will to need use as part of everyday communication.
Before we start it is important to understand that Russians have two manners of speaking, formal and informal. It would be considered slightly rude or impolite to use the wrong form in the wrong situation.


Yes & No :
Да {Da} - Yes
Нет {Nyet} - No

Thank you :

Спасибо {Spa-see-ba} - Thank-You
Пожалуйста {Pa-zhal-sta} - Please, and You're Welcome
* You can just add these to any sentence to make it more polite.

Hello & Goodbye :

Здравствуйте {Zdra-stvooy-tye} - Hello Formal
Привет {Pree-vyet} - Hi Informal
* Здравствуйте may be a little difficult to pronounce at first, but it is the most common Russian greeting, so try to practice it a lot.

Как дела? {Kak dela} - How are things?
Хорошо спасибо {Kharasho Spasiba} - Good/Well thank you.
Очень хорошо Спасибо {O-chen Kharasho Spasiba} - Very good/well thank you.
Плохо {Plokho} - Bad

До свидания {Da-svee-da-nee-ye} - Good-bye Not necessarily Formal

Пока {pa-ka} - Bye Informal
* The До in До свидания is pronounced as part as the next word.

Introducing Yourself :

Меня зовут... {Menya zavoot} - My name is...
Как вас зовут? {Kak vas zavoot} - What is your name?
Очень приятно {Ochen preeyatna} - Pleased to meet you.
